HEARD Gilbert Vincent Bromell (I1115)

2246 Hilda May DESNOY appears to have been the daughter of Henry and Sarah Ann DESNOY of Ballarat VIC and 329 Inkerman Street, East St. Kilda VIC. It appears that she probably passed away at Hervey Bay QLD in 1992. Appears to have been a excellent pianist in that her performances were noted in the newspapers. DESNOY Hilda May (I2136)

2247 His address: 1 Wellington St., Clifton Hill. Her address: Gertrude St., Fitzroy. His age: 22. Place of Birth: Kingston (up)on Thames, England. Occupation: Omnibus Driver. Parents: Charles SUMNER & Elizabeth SUTCLIFFE. Family F708

2248 His ahes were buried with the remains of his wife and the ashes of his daughter Jean Elizabeth TINKLER (1921-1950) at Werribee Cemetery VIC. TINKLER Robert Nathan (I8492)

2249 His baptism does not appear in Cornwall records. Occupation: Clerk (in the burial record). He signed the Protestation of 1641 and was alive at the time of his father's Will (1651). CORNISH Phillip (I26006)

2250 His brothers, Pte. Thomas VINSON and Sgt. Richard C. VINSON served in the same unit. VINSON John J. (I27016)

2251 His brothers, Sgt. John J. VINSON and Pte. Thomas VINSON served in the same unit.

VINSON Richard C. (I27018)

2252 His brothers, Sgt. John J. VINSON and Sgt. Richard C. VINSON served in the same unit. VINSON Thomas (I27017)

2253 His father having served in the 14th. Battalion (Jacka's Mob), AIF in WWI and won a Military Medal for conspicuous bravery in FRA. CLEMENTS Jack Gurney, MID (I4200)

2254 His first wife was Mary Ann ROBINSON (born 1827) who died May 11, 1883, age 56 years and 8 months, a native of Grimsby, LIN. They had 12 children. Benjamin died at the home of one of his daughters in a house just north of the four corners in Whitby. He was a Brethren by denomination, a branch of the Quakers. A tall man, over 6 feet tall, he had an interesting life. He lived at Port Whitby after emigrating in 1856 to Canada. He was involved with sailing, then was an engine driver when Chester DRAPER was Harbour Master; later he was a county constable, and a contractor for moving buildings. Currently there is a street or court in North Whitby named Worfolk. His grand-daughter Effie PRESTON at 99 Court St., Oshawa (728-2995), knows no nothing about Charlotte. In fact until recently, she didn't know that her grandfather had married for the second time (13 Apr 1996). WORFOLK Benjamin (I5400)

2255 His half-brother, Percy Thomas Beckley JEWELL was the informant on the Death Certificate. JEWELL John Beckley (I9435)

2256 His headstone shows that he was awarded a Military Medal (MM) but the award is not listed on any of the web sites which record these awards. It should also be stated that the MM was awarded only to non-commissioned members of the Army and not to officers.

He was reported missing in action on 26 June 1941 during the Greek campaign and subsequently spent the remaining days of WWII in German POW camps.
MORRIS Albert George (I1310)

2257 His record of service reveals that Percy A. HAHN did not leave Canada for active service. HAHN Percy Alvin (I33625)

2258 His second marriage. Family F1883

2259 His service record is somewhat confusing as regards the battalion he served in and his rank. BOND Walter (I1559)

2260 His service record reveals that he progressed steadily through the ranks. However, he was troubled by poor health throughout his service. Eventually he developed Epithelioma on a lip which led to his return to Australia and him being discharged as unfit for active service. HOCKRIDGE Percival Horace (I31959)

2261 His service record reveals that he suffered in a bad way with dysentry, so much so that he was evacuated to hospitals in Malta and England to effect a cure, prior to a return to duty. FITCH Samuel Jonathan (I38793)

2262 His son, Joe BECKLEY was the informant on his father's death certificate. BECKLEY John (I9431)

2263 His term in the VDC was probably terminated due to the fact that as Farmer/Grazier/Land owner he was engaged in a reserved occupation.

Late in his life it was discovered that his real priority during WWII was to join the Navy. Once again his reserved occupation status probably snuffed out that ambition.
WALTER Stanley Frederick (I779)

2264 His wife Ann is a widow in the 1851 Census. OATS Thomas (I38691)

2265 His wife, Rose Mary McGINTY, was unfortunately the victim of murder on 2 Apr 1891. The perpetrator of that crime was one John FINNIGAN who was sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment with hard labour. FINNIGAN was released on 9 Dec 1907 with remissions for good behaviour etc.
(Ref. VPRS 515/44/p.390, Prisoner No. 24701)

At the time of this tragic event Henry Thomas SUMNER was in gaol serving a sentence for counterfeiting of half-crown coins. According to newspaper accounts of the murder and trial five of the six children had been placed into the care of the Department of Neglected Children prior to the death of their mother, presumably on the conviction of their father for coining. Set out below are extracts from the criminal record books relating to Henry Thomas.

VPRS 10858/25/p.254, Description of Prisoners, Prisoner No..23012, Date of Admission..23 Dec. 1890, Name..Henry Sumner, Date of Birth.. 1858[?], Height..5' 5 1/2", Complexion..Fresh, Hair..Light Brown, Eyes..Light Grey, Nose..Prominent, Mouth..Medium, Eyebrows..Light, Visage..Oval, Forehead..Medium, Weight..11 stone, Build..Medium, Age..32, Native Place..England, Trade..Plasterer, Religion..C of E. 6 Aug 1889, 3 months, obscene language.

7 Apr 1890, 1 month, assault.

VPRS 515/41
Melbourne Gaol, 18 Mar 1889, to freedom by bail.

Melbourne Gaol, 12 Nov 1890, to freedom by bail.

Melbourne Gaol, 15 Dec 1890, 2 February, 1891, having an article improperly, 2 days close confinement on 1/2 rations.

Pentridge Gaol, 23 Dec 1890, 4 January, 1892, having a knife improperly, 24 hours solitary confinement.

Pentridge Gaol, 28 Jun 1892, disorderly conduct, 3 days solitary confinement.

Pentridge Gaol, 22 Jul 1892, to freedom by remission.

The second to last entry on his criminal record is as follows:
28/6/96, Disorderly Conduct, 3 days sol conf cum [solitary confinement cumulative] ed.
The puzzling thing about this entry is that it is long after his confinement in Pentridge Prison and about 5 months before his demise on 15 Nov 1896. Perhaps he took some leave from his labouring employment at Rutherglen and journeyed to Melbourne and fell off the wagon and drank too much, with predictable results.
____

At his trial for counterfeiting, crown evidence was given against him by both his eldest son Charles Henry Joseph SUMNER, and eldest daughter Alice Rose SUMNER. Charles showed the police the hiding place used by his father for some of his plaster moulds. These reports also relate the fact that the marriage of Henry and Rose was strongly opposed by her parents (Joseph and Alice McGINTY). It is even stated that they took legal action in an attempt to secure an annulment of the marriage, presumably on the grounds of the age of Rose (18) or the fact that she married outside the Roman Catholic faith.

2287 In 1891, Nathan visited his brother, William, in Orono IA as the following article appeared in a local Orono newspaper where William was living:
"Mr. Nathan Walter, Iowa, brother of William Walter of this town and a former old resident, is here on a visit after an absence of 42 years. Mr. Walter fought in the army of the Potomac under General Grant in the American War."

He sustained injuries when his horse fell on him and he had to file a petition to receive a pension.

2288 In 1901, about 3300 monuments including the one belonging to John James WESTWOOD were moved to a 25 acre site bounded by Bunnerong Road, La Perouse and the existing Botany Cemetery.

The headstone is believed to have been in the Church of England section which is located close to Bunnerong Road. A transcription of the headstone is set out below:

"John WESTWOOD, Sergeant of the 99th. Regt., died 25th. of May 1845, aged 38 years. Stone erected by his brother NCOs."

Unfortunately, the headstone has not survived to the present day [1988] as friends visiting Sydney have looked for it without success. The ravages of time and particularly motor vehicle exhaust fumes are thought to have done the damage.
