6043	Seriously wounded by gun shots in his back and both thighs on 27 Feb 1917 while serving on the Western Front. Repatriated firstly to England and later to Australia as a result. He was granted an incapacity pension of 51/9 (fifty-one shillings and nine pence, or 2 pounds, 11 shillings and nine pence) per fortnight on 5 Apr 1918, the day following his discharge from the AIF on the grounds of incapacity due to serious wounds sustained on active service in FRA. His Lancaster bomber was shot down over Dusseldorf, Germany in Aug 1942 where he was taken prisoner firstly at Stalag 8B at Lamsdorf and later at Stalagluft 3 at Sagan. Marched across Germany to Lubeck to freedom in 1945. Stalagluft 3 was the camp from which "The Great Escape" took place and about 50 of the escapees were illegally executed for doing so. Awarded a Distinguished Flying Medal on 27 Jun 1944 when a Flight Sergeant (later commissioned and promoted to Pilot Officer). Citation: "This airman has completed a large number of operational sorties during which he has displayed keenness and cool courage. On one occasion when his aircraft was attacked by two enemy fighters and seriously damaged, his calm directions to his pilot and his accurate fire enabled his crew to warn off the attacking aircraft and damaged one of them.
