    Notes:

    Frederick William HERD (1894-1954) was a patient at the Geelong Hospital between 18 Mar 1915 and 6 Apr 1915. The disease as listed was Bubonocele [groin hernia] and his address was 85 Garden Street, East Geelong VIC. (Ref. Film 738, GHRC, Geelong Hospital Admission Books).

    Served as a Lieutenant in the Australian Citizen Military Forces prior to signing up to serve overseas.

    Military:
    Seriously wounded by gun shots in his back and both thighs on 27 Feb 1917 while serving on the Western Front. Repatriated firstly to England and later to Australia as a result.

    He was granted an incapacity pension of 51/9 (fifty-one shillings and nine pence, or 2 pounds, 11 shillings and nine pence) per fortnight on 5 Apr 1918, the day following his discharge from the AIF on the grounds of incapacity due to serious wounds sustained on active service in FRA.     Notes:

    Mystery surrounds the movement of William HERD from Sydney to Melbourne after his initial arrival in Sydney. Recent information which is unconfirmed, is that he stayed on in Sydney with some of his PARK relatives, while the rest of the family journeyed on to Melbourne. One thing is certain and that is that his name does not appear on the passenger list of the "Hope", the interstate vessel on which the remainder of the family travelled to Melbourne.

    Arrived Sydney NSW aboard the 'Mandarin' arriving on 18 Oct 1838. Believed to have stayed with PARK family relatives in Sydney before following the rest of his family to Port Phillip VIC.

    John HERD and all of his family barring eldest son William travelled on to the Port Phillip District on the interstate vessel 'Hope' soon after their arriving in Sydney on 18 Oct 1838. Son William is believed to have stayed in Sydney with his mother's PARK relatives before coming on to the Port Phillip district of Victoria.

    Appears to have leased or owned Allotment 4A of 24 acres, No section number, Parish of Bulban, County Grant. The lease or ownership was transferred to Garrett O'BRIAN [sic] (Abt.1823-1899) his son-in-law on 9 Apr 1853. This land is situated at Little River VIC.

    His grave at Warracknabeal Cemetery is unfortunately unmarked.

    John HERD was elected to the South Barwon Municipal Council in July 1861 and was immediately elected as Chairman of the Council on 9 Jul 1861. (The Argus, Melbourne, 10 Jul 1861, p5)

    Died:
    Died while staying with his eldest daughter Mary BENNETT (m.n. HERD, Abt. 1821-1885) and son-in-law Francis BENNETT (1815-1894) at Kewell North VIC. He fell while out walking and never recovered. For some reason the death notice placed in the 'Horsham Times' of 15 Feb 1884 gives his age as being 95 years which is too generous by 10 years.
