- Promated to L/Cpl, Cpl and Sgt. Wounded in action (19 Jul 1916) but recovered and undertook an officer training course from which he graduated to join the 5th. Machine Gun Battalion, Australian Infantry as a 2nd. Lieutenant. Shortly after he applied for and was successful in completing a flying course from which he graduated successfully as a Lieutenant in the Australian Flying Corps (AFC). It appears that he was badly injured in a flying accident about this time but recovered completely. On return to Australia he joined the fledgling RAAF as a Flying Officer flying instructor at Point Cook VIC.
