323	Alice Rose SUMNER (1881-1954) was committed to the Neglected Childrens System (No. 17810) on 24 Nov 1890 soon after the arrest of her father for coining (counterfeiting). She was fostered at several addresses in the Bendigo area and later at Ascot Vale, Williamstown, Brunswick, Moonee Ponds, Cape Clear and Highton. As was the custom, her term in that system expired on her eighteenth birthday (23 Aug 1899) presumably while she was still at Highton where she was in the care of a Mrs. COWAN. One can safely guess that this is where she first met her future husband Frederick Forbes HERD (1872-1944). 364	Another one-time identity of Windsor has gone the way of all flesh, in the person of Mr. John Henry Single Mills, whose demise was briefly referred to in last week's issue of the GAZETTE. Mr. Mills was brother to Mrs. Collison, and step father to Mr. S.E. Dyer and Mrs. F.J. Morley, of Windsor, and for many years he was in business in this town, conducting a bootmaking business on a large scale. Some time ago he removed to Balmain, where he established a boot-factory (that of Messrs J.H. Mills and Sons), which has ever since been successfully worked by himself and his sons,-though of late years Mr. Mills, senr., had retired from active participation in the management. Mr. Mills had been unwell for a considerable time, and as he had attained the good old age of 72 years, his illness was attributed to a general break-up of the system. During the early period of his residence in Windsor, Mr. Mills took a prominent part in the matter of establishing the Congregational Church, and he was a vigorous supporter of it till the time of his departure. He had but recently celebrated his golden wedding. As a citizen he was held in the highest of high repute by all who knew him, and in commercial circles he had the respect and confidence of all with whom he was brought into contact. The funeral took place on Saturday last, and was largely attended, Mr. T. Collison, of Windsor, being the conductor. The remains of the deceased gentleman were placed to rest in the Wesleyan Cemetery at McGrath's Hill, Rev W. Glasson officiating at the grave, where he delivered a most impressive address. A number of pretty wreaths were sent by Sydney friends. Amongst those present at the funeral were Messrs H. Mills and James Mills (partners in the business at Balmain), Wm. Mills and John Mills (sons of the deceased), Mrs. Foster (daughter), Messrs S.E. Dyer, F.J. Mortley (son-in-law), Stephen Foster (Foster and Sons, Ultimo), J.H. Williams, Freeman, C.J. Danahey (ex-M.P.), and others.
